Summit Context
At the 37th African Union (AU) Heads of State Summit, African Heads of State emphasised the urgent need to mobilize private capital for Africa’s $3 trillion Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) climate and sustainable development projects by 2030. They recognised the inadequacy of Multilateral Development Bank (MDB) concessional loans, which will address only 10% of the continents private financing gap. Heads of State re-emphasised the importance of their commitment to work with the domestic and global institutional investment community to mobilise private capital at-scale to realise the objectives of the Nairobi Declaration.
In response, the SMI Africa Council (SMIAC) launched an investable asset classes initiative with Africa investor, to assist establish African Green industrial infrastructure and nature, as a globally competitive investable asset class, to mobilise domestic and global private and philanthropic capital at-scale. This initiative aims to create investable development opportunities, co-create bankable NDC investment programs, and fulfil the Nairobi Declaration’s private capital mobilisation goals through Institutional Investor-Public Partnerships (IIPPs) and blended investments.
Summit Objectives
The Ai African NDC Institutional Investment Summit will bring together African and global institutional investment, finance, and philanthropic leaders, to discuss and showcase private capital mobilisation at-scale strategies and Institutional Investor-Public Partnership opportunities, to collaboratively transform Africa’s energy system, increase its share in the $10 trillion per annum and growing global green industrial economy and foster market-appropriate risk and climate-adjusted returns for public and private investors.
The Summit will showcase work from the SMI Africa Council’s Investable Asset Classes Working Group (SMIAC-IACWG), Africa Investor (Ai), and the African Union’s Continental Business Network (CBN). Together, they aim to establish African green industrial infrastructure and nature as a globally competitive investable asset class and co-create bankable NDC investment programs.
These initiatives will fast-track the Nairobi Declaration’s private capital mobilization goals and decarbonize the world at an industrial scale through Institutional Investor-Public Partnerships and Blended Investments.
